Make a Colorful Sunburst Mirror

I have to tell you I am so thankful to have this blog, a place to share what I’ve accomplished. This colorful sunburst mirror was started at least a year ago, and I’ve picked it up to finish it a few times but something distracted me. Because of the blog I now have a reason to finish my projects. I seriously mean I want to inspire you all to make things, create things for your home and family. I am completely enjoying the whole process, thinking, creating/working, and sharing it all.

So here’s what I used to make my Colorful Sunburst Mirror:

Long wood shims, paint, a mirror, E6000 glue, picture hanging hardware

I chose 4 colors of paint. I painted 4 shims in the same color for a total of 16 shims.

After the paint is dry I then took the sander to the shims to give them a distressed look. I had help with this part because this boy can’t let anyone use a tool alone.

Once all the shims were painted and sanded I wiped them down to remove all dust. Then began laying them out in different ways to decide what I looked best. I decided to take all 4 shims of 1 color and glue them together in a cross so I had 4 crosses. This way all the colors would be evenly spaced.

After the glue was dry on the 4 crosses I played around with the stacking order. I also had to take into account the length of the shims once they were glued together. By making the cross 2 pieces would be longer than the other 2. I couldn’t have all of the longer pieces be on the same side, my sunburst mirror would look wacky. Once the order was decided I glued 2 crosses together, then the other 2 crosses.

Finally I glued all of the crosses stacked together. I kinda like it this way except you can see the glue.

Once all the stacked crosses were dry and the glue set I glued the mirror on. So that I could hang it on the mirror I added the picture hanging hardware to the back. Sorry you can see the messy back side of quick painting shims and paper stuck to the glue. Just keeping it real.

Our Colorful Sunburst Mirror is now hanging in our family room above our card catalog. I’m so glad to finally be getting somethings on the way and it makes it even more special that I made it myself.
