How to Hang a Heavy Mirror

Hi All!

I recently shared a quick “use what you have” post where I painted a candle holder to update it to match a new décor. The paint I used was leftover from painting a HUGE mirror. Have you noticed a lot of people using what was a dresser mirror around the house and not on the dresser? Do you remember when I found a dresser mirror on the curb and used chalkboard paint to make a menu board for our kitchen?

Well I got this mirror from a garage sale site along with a large candle holder for a whole $10!!! Score!!! The mirror has been sitting in my garage for awhile before I finally painted it navy. I waited to add this to our décor partly because I knew there was no hanging hardware on the back and partly because it was pretty beat up and needed painted.

Today I want to show you how to hang a heavy mirror. Or you could follow these steps to hang other heavy items that don’t have hanging hardware already installed.

First you need to find 2 studs where you would like to hang your heavy mirror and mark them. Here is my stud husband doing this for me so I could take the pictures 😉 (I like to watch him work)

Then find a sturdy spot on mirror near the top and close to the side edge to place a screw. Once you’ve found the right spot on one side measure how far down from the top that spot is and make a corresponding mark to place a 2nd screw on the other side.

Now into those spots you just marked use screws that are not longer than the piece is thick and washers but don’t drive the screw in all the way yet.

Make a loop in 1/16 inch cable and secure with cable ferrules. Place the loop over the screw then drive the screw in all the way to secure the cable.

Finally wrap the cable around the other screw pulling the cable as tight as possible and securing with ferrules.

Now back to the studs where you are going to hammer in 16d or 16 penny nails at an angle leaving them out of the wall about 3/4 inch.

Now you are ready to hang that big heavy mirror. Just place the cable across the nails.

Do you like the mirror better in Navy? I sure do. It was pretty scratched up and it helps add some color to our upstairs hall/balcony area.

Thanks for stopping by At Home with Sweet T!!!
